How to Prepare a Nursery Bed for Seedlings

NURSERY BED PREPARATION

I always advice farmers to prepare their own seedlings in instead of buying ready seedlings.

Reasons

1. To avoid seedlings that are disease infested.

2. To learn the whole process of plant's life from seeds to maturity and learn how to take care of them.

3. The seedlings you prepare for yourself are already adapted to the environment you want to set up your garden. So will not give any problem to grow.

4. You will know which vegetables does well in your area, right away from the nursery bed.

■These are steps of preparing nursery bed in a basin.

1. Look for a wider basin of any material but not of any metal. Plastic is the best.

2. Make some drainage holes at the bottom.

3. Put in some small stones followed by a layer of sand at the bottom of the basin.

4. Finally, fill in the soil you prepared earlier for planting almost full.

5. Take some seeds of vegetables of your choice you want to grow e.g you can plant each of the following vegetables, (spinach, lettuce, kales, tomatoes cabbage, black night shade/managu, amaranthus, capsicum, bulb onions).

6. Mix the seeds you want to plant with the top soil in the basin to distribute them evenly.

7. Cover the seeds with light soil.

8. Water your seeds immediately, then mulch them with a light dry grass.

9. Place the basin where they can receive enough sunlight.

10. Water your nursery bed every morning and evening daily.

11. After the seeds sprouts, remove the grass and continue watering until the seedlings are ready for transplanting time. Transplanting will take place after about 4-5 weeks.

NB You can buy vegetables seeds from any agrovet around you.
